Gifts, Even Trades, or Down Trade

Gifts

A gifted vehicle, where no money was exchanged, is not taxed. This office will give you a zero dollar receipt to take to the clerk's office to obtain your title. However, if the vehicle has a loan on it, it can not be gifted and the buyer would have to assume the loan.

Even Trades

If a person traded another person a vehicle and no money was exchanged, there would be no sales tax due. If you worked for someone and they gave you a vehicle for the work you provide, that is considered an even change and no sales tax would be due. This office will give you a zero dollar receipt to take to the clerk's office to obtain your title.

Down Trade

When the amount of the trade in is more than the price of the new vehicle purchased, this is considered a down trade and no sales tax is due.  A bill of sale has to be present from the dealership to prove this transaction. This office will give you a zero dollar receipt to take to the clerk's office to obtain your title.
